A Hyundai Sonata rear-ended our Hyundai Santa Fe. The main impact hit the Santa Fe tow hitch, leaving the rear of the Santa Fe visually much less damaged while the Hyundai Sonata sustained significant front-end damage.
In this video, we show the real accident without staging: both vehicles after the collision, the damaged Hyundai Sonata, the condition of our Hyundai Santa Fe and the traffic police documenting the accident at the scene.
What happened in the Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Sonata accident?
Our Hyundai Santa Fe was struck from behind by a Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai Sonata driver was responsible for the collision.
The impact occurred at the rear of the Santa Fe, where the vehicle was equipped with a tow hitch.
The difference in visible damage after the collision is significant: the rear of the Hyundai Santa Fe remained relatively intact, while the Hyundai Sonata sustained substantial damage to its front end.
The tow hitch took the main impact
In this particular accident, the tow hitch became the first major point of contact during the rear-end collision.
Its rigid construction absorbed and transferred a significant part of the impact, leaving the Santa Fe's rear bumper and exterior components visually less damaged than they might have been in a direct bumper-to-bumper collision.
However, limited exterior damage does not mean that the Santa Fe should not be inspected after the collision.
A tow hitch is attached to structural mounting points, meaning that impact forces can be transferred through the hitch into the vehicle body.
What should be checked on a Hyundai Santa Fe after an impact to the tow hitch?
After a substantial rear impact, an inspection should include more than the bumper itself.
Important areas to inspect include:
- the tow hitch: checking for bending, movement or deformation;
- tow hitch mounting points: bolts, brackets and attachment points;
- rear structural reinforcement: checking for deformation;
- rear frame or longitudinal structures: particularly where impact forces may have been transferred;
- rear body panel: checking for hidden deformation;
- bumper and bumper mounts: checking for cracks and broken guides;
- tow hitch electrical connector: checking the socket, wiring and contacts;
- body alignment: especially after a significant impact.
Some damage may remain hidden until the bumper is removed or the underside of the vehicle is inspected properly.
Why can a tow hitch cause hidden damage after a rear-end collision?
A conventional plastic bumper can deform and absorb part of an impact. A tow hitch is considerably more rigid.
Because of this, collision forces may travel through the tow bar and directly into its mounting points and structural areas of the vehicle.
The car may therefore appear relatively intact from the outside while still requiring inspection for:
- tow bar deformation;
- damaged mounting brackets;
- movement of mounting points;
- structural body deformation;
- damaged tow hitch wiring or electrical socket.
A proper technical inspection is therefore still important after this type of accident.
Hyundai Sonata sustained significant front-end damage
The video clearly shows the condition of the Hyundai Sonata after the collision.
The front of the vehicle sustained substantial visible damage after contacting the rear of the Hyundai Santa Fe and its tow hitch.
Following this type of front-end collision, components that may require inspection include:
- front bumper;
- front grille;
- headlights and mounting points;
- front bumper reinforcement;
- radiators;
- plastic air guides;
- body mounting points;
- sensors and electrical wiring;
- front body alignment.
The exact extent of the Hyundai Sonata damage can only be determined after a complete vehicle inspection.
Traffic police documentation at the accident scene
Traffic police attended the scene and documented the accident. The video shows the real roadside environment, both vehicles and the documentation process.
After a collision, it is useful to preserve as much information as possible about the original condition of the vehicles.
Useful evidence may include:
- wide photographs of the accident scene;
- vehicle positions;
- damage to each vehicle;
- visible impact marks;
- condition of the tow hitch;
- bumper and body damage;
- documents prepared at the scene.
Photos and videos help preserve an objective record of how both vehicles looked immediately after the collision.
Should a tow hitch be installed to protect a vehicle?
In our particular accident, the tow hitch clearly played a significant role and took the main rear impact.
However, a tow hitch should not be considered primarily as a crash-protection device. Its main purpose is towing trailers and carrying loads approved for the vehicle.
Its rigid construction may transfer collision forces deeper into the vehicle structure. For that reason, the hitch and its mounting points should be inspected after a substantial rear impact even when the bumper appears relatively undamaged.

What happens next with the Hyundai Santa Fe?
The next step is a complete technical inspection of the vehicle.
Although the tow hitch took the main impact and the rear of the Hyundai Santa Fe appears relatively well preserved, the tow hitch itself, its mounting points and the vehicle's structural components still need to be inspected.
In future updates, we will show the inspection results and determine whether the Santa Fe sustained any hidden damage during the rear-end collision.
