Shipping Container Restoration After a Fire: Surface Preparation, Painting and Final Result

After a fire last winter, this metal shipping container was left standing for quite a while before we finally found the time to work on it.

We are not professional container painters and this was never intended to be a professional restoration project. It is simply another real story from everyday life at RefBelHolod: an old damaged container, some free time, patience and a decision to try restoring it ourselves.

What condition was the container in after the fire?

After the winter fire, the container was far from perfect. The metal showed signs of age, corrosion, old paint and surface damage.

It remained untouched for a long time because more urgent work always came first.

Eventually, we decided it was time to deal with it.

The goal was not to create a factory-perfect finish. We simply wanted to improve the appearance of the container and protect the metal with a fresh coating.

Preparing the metal surface

When repainting an old steel container, the paint itself is only part of the job. Surface preparation has a major influence on the final result.

Before painting, the work included:

  • inspecting the condition of the metal;
  • cleaning dirt and contamination from the surface;
  • removing loose and damaged old paint;
  • working on rusty and problematic areas;
  • preparing the steel for the new coating;
  • removing dust and debris after surface preparation.

The better the preparation, the cleaner the final finish and the lower the chance of the new coating peeling prematurely.

I am not a professional painter — I simply decided to try

This project was not completed in a professional paint booth and there was no team of specialist body painters involved.

We simply reached the point where we finally had time to work on the container ourselves.

When this is not your everyday job, everything naturally takes longer. Some areas need to be redone, and many small details have to be worked out during the process.

Sometimes the simplest rule works: if you keep working on something long enough and do not give up, eventually you get a result.

Painting the shipping container

Once the surface preparation was completed, the container was ready for painting.

We chose a bright yellow finish. It completely changed the appearance of the container and made the before-and-after difference particularly noticeable.

The work was completed step by step:

  • preparing individual sections;
  • treating the steel surface;
  • applying the new coating;
  • checking for missed areas;
  • finishing difficult sections;
  • performing a final visual inspection.

The biggest change is the overall appearance. What previously looked like an old rusty metal container now looks much cleaner, brighter and more presentable.

Why is metal preparation more important than the paint itself?

One common mistake when repainting old steel is applying new paint directly over rust, dirt or loose old coating.

Even high-quality paint may not perform well if the underlying surface has not been prepared correctly.

When working with an old steel shipping container, it is useful to inspect:

  • corrosion;
  • loose old paint;
  • welded joints;
  • corners and lower sections;
  • doors and locking mechanisms;
  • areas where moisture and dirt regularly collect.

Surface preparation can often take longer than the actual painting process.

Before and after: the final container restoration result

Before the work began, the container looked old, rusty and clearly needed attention.

After preparation and repainting, its appearance changed completely.

This is not a professional restoration project or an attempt to demonstrate a perfect automotive-quality finish. It is simply an example of what can be achieved by taking on an old project and gradually working through it.
